她说：在中国教书的外教很快发现有一些问题中国学生经常问外国人。第一个问题一般是“你来自哪国家？”。如果答案是美国，那第二个问题就是“你来自哪个州？”。下面的对话中还经常包括“你会用筷子吗？”。Davis曾经问她的学生那么多人为什么都问同样的问题，他们告诉她这些问题都是上中学英语课的时候学的。
她说：刚到中国那一两个星期的时间，这种问题听起来没有什么奇怪，而且她明白对方是通过这些问题表示欢迎和友谊。但是现在她已经无法如此感受，只能感觉对方在告诉她：“你是陌生的，你是外国人，你跟我不同，你是一个有趣之物”。她会感觉有点难受，会想：怎么让人家把我看成人，而不只是从遥远、不熟、神秘的地方来的陌生人。
这种对话围绕着两个人的区别。固然了解你和别人的区别是一个有意思，甚至有重要意义的事情，但是它怎么能使两个初次见面的人成为朋友？彼此有初步认同感之后，两个人才能完全投入谈话。我已经复述了关于潘吉哥和一位女士出租车司机的故事，我觉得他的失败就属于这个种类。他没有跟女司机找到共同之处，就马上开始问几个关于女人当司机的问题，但是她的答案都很短，而且这种事儿明明在潘吉哥的经验范围之外，他又不是司机又不是女人，结果就谈不下去。
可见把两个人的区别当作交流的出发点能引起到失败，但是真的能产生Davis所形容的心情吗？作为生活在中国的外国人，我能肯定她说的是真的。虽然有人叫我“外国朋友”、“外宾”、“远方客人”等，但是我自己不把中国人当作“主人”。当我在这个社会中生活的时间，我把中国当作我的家，我跟中国同志一样在这里生活、工作、玩儿。但是听到一个陌生人向我问的第一个问题就是“你是哪国家的”，我就觉得这个人不想知道我怎么生活、怎么工作、怎么玩儿，他/她只能看得见我的皮肤白、鼻子高、头发咖啡色的。每一个人很复杂，有自己的性格、思维、爱好、梦想、能力等等。但是听到一个陌生人向我问的第一个问题就是“你是哪国家的”，我就觉得我被简化了，仅仅只剩下一个属性：国籍。确实让我有点难过。
也不只是我一个“老外”不喜欢分别的对待。最近Carlo表达得特别好：
“第二种则是对外国人的「异样」似乎毫无反应。这些人我非常喜欢。”
这种人，如果在学校里碰到你就会问“你是学生吗？”，在火车上碰到你就会问“你去哪儿？”。我也非常喜欢这些人。（这跟交流语言可没有关系）。
